How to Sell Your First Digital Product on Gumroad
Set up a Gumroad download with a clear product page, tested files, a price that accounts for current fees, and a simple way to reach buyers.
Gumroad is a straightforward checkout and delivery option for files, ebooks, tutorials, courses and memberships. It is especially useful when you can send people to a product page from your own site, newsletter or social posts.
1. Choose a product with a clear outcome
Pick one audience and one job the product helps them do. A workbook, small template bundle or focused guide is easier to describe and support than a folder of unrelated files.
Write down what the buyer gets, what they need to use it, whether updates are included and how they can contact you. Check Gumroad’s current terms and prohibited products before uploading.
2. Prepare the file and a helpful preview
Open the final file on more than one screen size if possible. Use plain file names, include a brief start-here note and ensure every link works. Add a cover image and preview pages that let a potential buyer understand the content without giving away the entire product.
Keep a local master copy. If you update a file later, note what changed so customers know which version they have.
3. Create the product page
Add the title, description, price, cover and product file in the product editor. Explain the result, contents, format, requirements and licence in concrete terms. A short preview or sample can help buyers decide whether the material suits them.
Set up a test purchase and use the customer receipt to confirm the download link and instructions work. Gumroad documents product setup and customer access in its Help Center.
4. Price for the sale route
At the time of writing, Gumroad lists direct sales at 10% plus $0.50 per transaction, while sales through Discover are charged at 30%; payment processing may also apply to direct sales. Confirm the current breakdown on Gumroad’s pricing page and fee help article. Estimate your net amount before deciding on discounts or affiliate commissions.
Do not plan around Discover traffic alone. Make a simple launch route: a useful free sample, a short email, a product page on your website, or a post that demonstrates the product’s use.
5. Publish and learn from the first customers
- Open the product page on mobile and check every link.
- Confirm the price, file version and licence match your description.
- Test the checkout and receipt before sharing the URL.
- Tell buyers where to get help if a download fails.
- Review visits, purchases, refunds and support questions.
If visitors arrive but do not buy, improve the promise, preview or fit before adding more products. If buyers purchase but need help, make the instructions clearer and test the next version with a new customer.
